Palliative Care is in its infancy in South Africa and hospital based palliative care prior to ALPC was almost unheard of.  To ensure that PC grows in SA we need to EDUCATE our medical personal at all levels from students to trainees, nurses to nurse educators,intern to professor, managers to the Ministers of Health. Allied health professionals e.g. physiotherapists.

Education of patients and their families is a key part of the PC to ensure appropriate understanding, planning and future healthcare decisions.

Community and larger population based awareness is imperative to achieve change in healthcare that will incorporate PC as the norm and not a luxury.
